Kobe Bryant on NBA GOAT debate: ‘I really don’t care’

Kobe Bryant’s name of course gets thrown into the mix — along with the likes of Michael Jordan and LeBron James, among many others — whenever a debate arises about who is the NBA’s greatest of all time, but the Los Angeles Lakers legend makes it clear he could not care less about the endless conversations.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, Bryant indicates there’s too much to look forward to in life to waste time contemplating whether or not one deserves accolades like being hailed as the GOAT.

“It’s hard for people to believe, but I really don’t care,” Bryant said, as transcribed by Clutch Points. “I’ve moved on. You have a career, you do the best you can for the 20 years I was fortunate to play and then you shelf it. You’re done. You move on to the next thing. Now I’m focused on these next 20 years.

“Those debates are entertaining, I’m sure it’s fun for people to engage on those, but for me personally, it doesn’t matter.”

When it comes to moving on from his iconic NBA career, Bryant means it. The soon-to-be Hall of Famer has fully immersed himself in myriad business pursuits, including launching a line of performance-driven body care products, producing a young adult book series and becoming a writer himself.

Bryant, while pursuing his business interests, has tended to avoid the NBA limelight for the most part since his retirement. That has changed of late, as Bryant has been a bit more vocal about the goings-on in the league he once dominated, including weighing in on what’s going on with his former team, among other topics.
