The Boston Celtics have been forced to navigate a tumultuous season despite starting out as potential front-runners in the Eastern Conference, and Kyrie Irving clearly has had his fill.
While the Celtics (37-25, fifth in the East) have managed to keep things afloat, the team is mired in a four-game losing streak. As a result, Boston's once-lofty reputation in the conference continues to take a beating.
The occasional struggles, highlighted by the recent slide, have proved to be a disruptive force within the Celtics’ locker room, with Irving often taking on a starring role in the ongoing drama.
It would appear that the Celtics superstar point guard would simply prefer the regular season to be done. That way, the team could move past all the distractions and disappointments and instead focus on a postseason run.
“I can’t wait for all this other BS about regular season — and keep getting better, and talking over and over and over about what we can do to keep getting better in the regular season,” Irving said, via The Athletic’s Jay King. “I just want to be at the highest level playing. And that’s what I’m here for.”
The Celtics went on a remarkable run in the postseason last year as Irving and Gordon Hayward sat on the sidelines with injuries. Irving enjoyed supporting his teammates’ unexpected dash to the Eastern Conference Finals, even though it bothered him to not be contributing.
Irving clearly aspires to be part of something magical in the playoffs. If only the regular-season “BS” could just be over and done with.
It merits noting, however, that the Celtics need to get things back on track before the team puts itself in a position of being a bottom-four squad in the playoffs, which obviously would make a lengthy postseason run a much more difficult pursuit.
