Trae Young and Luka Doncic will constantly be compared to each other as their NBA careers progress. The Hawks' trade that sent Doncic to the Mavericks is to blame for that.
While we're not even through January of their rookie seasons, Doncic appears to be a generational talent. Young, on the other hand, has shown flashes of All-Star ability, but he has struggled with his shot for much of the season (29 percent from 3-point range).
Young, though, is still betting on himself to emerge the winner of the Young-Doncic comparison when their careers are done. The Hawks guard joined ESPN's The Jump on Monday with teammate John Collins, and Byron Scott asked the rookie who he thought would be the better player.
Young said:
"In my eyes, it's not a question. It's gonna be me, but that's just the competitive nature in my blood. I think that's a no-brainer with me if you ask me that."
Obviously, there was no way Young was going to appear on national television and say that Doncic will be the better player. I don't think any NBA player will admit another player - short of LeBron or Curry - is better than him. In that sense, it was strange for Scott to put Young on the spot with a question that we knew how he was going to answer.
At the very least, it shows that Young hasn't given up on himself. The potential is still there for him to develop into a quality NBA player.
