It’s no longer a pipe dream. There’s now a chance that LeBron James and Kyrie Irving link up in Los Angeles as Lakers teammates.
With Bryant being an impending free agent, it was previously reported that he had not closed the door on the possibility of rejoining his former championship teammate.
Now comes this note from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith indicating that Irving will indeed give the Lakers a free agent meeting this coming summer.
“I’m told Kyrie Irving will grant the Lakers an interview this offseason,” Smith said on ESPN’s First Take. “The Lakers will have an opportunity to get Kyrie Irving to come to LA. I didn’t say he’s coming to LA. I did not say that. I don’t know what he’s gonna do.”
Closing up shop on what has been a disappointing season, the Lakers have cap room for two max-contract free agents. We previously looked at a few options. However, none of those players included a point guard of Irving’s ilk.
Los Angeles seems to be in good hands with Rajon Rondo at the point. He meshes well with LeBron. But Irving would clearly be a dramatic upgrade.
With Irving currently a member of the Celtics, whispers are that Irving will leave Boston in free agency. Most of the talk has surrounded the possibility of him teaming up with Kevin Durant as a member of the Knicks. This could throw some hot water on that idea.
